German company Lürssen has launched Azzam, the world’s largest private yacht, eclipsing the previous record holder, Roman Abramovich‘s 533-foot Eclipse.

Designed by Nauta Yachts in Italy, the $609 million Azzam is almost two football fields long and rivals the size of some cruise ships. It took four years to complete from concept to construction.

Amongst many other features the yacht has a main salon with a length of 29 m and a beam of 18m with an open plan and no pillars.

The interior decoration was undertaken by Christophe Leoni, whose brief was to create “a sophisticated and luxurious interior in a turn of the century ‘Empire’ style”.

The Azzam will travel in excess of 30 knots, powered by a combination of 2 gas turbines and 2 diesel engines with a total of 94000 horse powers; she will require a 50-person crew to maintain her.

The annual Costume Institute Gala in New York, known as [...]

The annual Costume Institute Gala in New York, known as the Met Ball, is the fashion industry’s chance to show off on its very own red carpet. In attendance at the 2013 ball were stars including Beyonce, Anne Hathaway and Sienna Miller, many of whom opted to wear outfits inspired by this year’s theme: ‘punk chaos’.

The Costume Institute Gala (or Costume Institute Ball), known as the Met Ball or Met Gala, is an annual ball that celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s (The Met) fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. The red carpet evening where celebrities arrive dressed to impress is described as the fashion industry’s “Night of Nights”. Fashion industry experts and style magazines consider the event, which is hosted by Vogue, to be the fashion world’s best red carpet event. It is regarded as the top annual social event in New York City. The event has been an annual affair at the Met since 1948 (the year in which the Costume Institute was founded), but it has been held in different parts of the museum over the years.

” I think of myself as a workaholic during the week [...]

” I think of myself as a workaholic during the week and a hippie on the weekends,” says Isabel Marant, dismantling a cigarette to make a roll-up. Even under the glass atrium of her Parisian studio, surrounded by stark white walls and diligent staff typing in silence, Marant, sitting cross-legged on a school chair, brings an air of the bohemian to the corporate space. But then it is Friday, and soon she will leave for the weekly trip she makes with her nine-year-old son Tal and handbag-designer husband, Jérôme Dreyfuss, to their no-frills countryside cabin outside the city.

STYLE RÉSUMÉ

NAME: Isabel Marant

PROFESSION: Designer, Isabel Marant

MY FAVORITE FOOTWEAR: Always flats when I am working so I can run around. I have four pairs of my favorite black suede boots

MY FAIL-SAFE PIECES: I wear my own label all the time, new-season pieces mixed with old favorites. I never design something I wouldn’t wear myself

“In the week, I have no idea what the weather is like, I don’t care,” she says of her head-down work ethic. “But I need to be surrounded by nature from time to time or I feel suffocated. I want to grab mud and feel the ground beneath my bare feet.” In the cabin’s grounds is a river, in which Marant swims 3km every weekend morning between April and September. “It is like a walk in the forest, but I swim it instead. I empty my head and get clear visions of work.”

In her off-duty wardrobe of shorts and tank tops (her own label, naturally), all sinewy caramel limbs and bare-faced beauty, Marant has an ‘earth mother’ vibe about her. There are few French runway designers making clothes you feel comfortable wearing while dancing in a field at midnight, but Marant’s are made with a freer lifestyle in mind. Though she didn’t grow up in a free-spirited household – she had a conservative upbringing in the wealthy Paris suburb of Neuilly – Marant began experimenting with her look at the age of nine, rebelling against her peers. “I wasn’t loving myself very much back then. I didn’t think I was pretty so I wanted to hide,” she says, recalling how she copied Patti Smith’s long fringe so no one could see her face. “I wore flares with rotten hems, suede shoes and Laura Ashley long white skirts.”

Her friends, meanwhile, were discovering penny loafers and the bright prints of Fiorucci. “No one was used to seeing kids with their own style, but the prim girls in the chic district admired me because I had the spirit to do what I wanted.” Soon those friends began asking Marant to make clothes for them, too. A designer was born.

Some 35 years later and that unrestricted aesthetic still exists in every piece, from SS13′s studded boots to the paisley tunics with their ’70s vibe. But elements of those young insecurities still exist: when Marant slips into a pair of micro shorts for our shoot, she pulls her hair into a bun, saying she hates to look “too feminine”.

These days, her look is made up of favorite designs of past seasons. Of the varsity emblem sweater she is wearing, she has another 14 at home; 25 pairs of the printed jeans; countless repeats of the faded tee; and four pairs of the flat, black suede boots that she describes as her “nun shoes”.

Nonconformity runs in the Marant family, it seems. Her son,Tal, she says, is a “complete bohemian”, who cries every Sunday when it is time to leave the cabin. “He likes to play with wood, fashioning bows and arrows. He’d happily live in the mountains.” Clearly, there’s a part of his mother that would like to do the same

Bahnhofstrasse

Zürich, Switzerland
The Bahnhofstrasse, Zürich’s resplendent, tree-lined exclusive shopping avenue, stretches a mile (1.4 kilometers). You’ll find some of Switzerland’s top shopping along its length, from top clothing designers to high-end options for shoes, furs, accessories, china, and jewelry. And, of course, Swiss watches.

Rodeo Drive

Beverly Hills, California
Rodeo Drive manages to pack in enough audacious glitz to qualify as one of the world’s most glamorous and expensive shopping stretches. Just off Rodeo lies Two Rodeo, a strip of boutiques modeled after European boutiques, with cobblestones, fountains, and bistros. Perhaps its least known amenity is the free two-hour valet parking.

The Ginza

Tokyo, Japan
The Ginza, comprising eight blocks, is Tokyo’s most exclusive shopping area. It boasts some of the most expensive real estate on Earth. Known luxury and exclusive retailers stand side by side with Tokyo’s landmark department stores, Mitsukoshi, Wako (whose clock is a landmark unto itself), and the 14-story Marion. The latter actually houses seven movie theaters and two department stores. Many store windows feature elaborate displays that showcase typical Japanese culture. At night colorful neon and fluorescent lights flood the Ginza with light, bringing the otherwise gray city to life

Fifth Avenue

New York City, New York
Large landmark department stores (Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s) and small high-end designer name boutiques (Ferragamo, Harry Winston, Versace, Emanual Ungaro, Gucci, Henri Bendel, Tiffany, Steuben, Christian Dior) make New York’s Fifth Avenue a shopper’s paradise. In December, the stores mount elaborate displays—doormen dressed as toy soldiers at FAO Schwarz, a 27-foot (8-meter) sparkling snowflake floating over the street outside Tiffany, winter wonderland scenes in Macy’s windows—that attract holiday shoppers and sightseers. Strolling the crowded sidewalks of Fifth Avenue at this time of year is a special treat.

Bond Street

London, England
Bond Street is home to the most elegant and expensive shops in London. You will find designer clothing, perfume, art and antiques, jewelers, and more Royal Warrant holders (suppliers to the royal family) here than anywhere else in London. Old Bond Street, the short section at the southern end of Bond Street that joins Picadilly, has been distinguished by the most posh since the 1850s. Asprey and Agnew, Sotheby’s, and Phillips, to name a few, all appear against a backdrop of elegant houses turned shops that were once home to a host of distinguished politicians, artists, and writers.

Like most good things, Clare Vivier began making bags in [...]

Like most good things, Clare Vivier began making bags in response to a need. Working for French television and busy traveling, she noticed a lack of functional laptop cases that were also stylish. She fabricated her own, which quickly parlayed into her now eponymous handbag line. Since then, she has collaborated with Theory, Steven Alan, Refinery 29, Commune, Wren, and Jasmin Shokrian. She attributes her sense of chic simplicity to her strong connection with France, where she spends a significant amount of time every year with her son and French documentarian husband, Thierry Vivier.

She marries classic French glamour with minimalist Los Angeles cool to produce a line of handbags and clutches that are as chic as they are utilitarian. Clare Vivier’s design principle is timeless but her aesthetic is bold, always taking into consideration the elegant tension between modern detail and classic shapes.

While her bags are now available globally, Clare Vivier roots herself in the Los Angeles fashion community with a nod to socially conscious construction and proudly bears the moniker, “locally made”. From conception to fabrication, her line has been made eclusively in Los Angeles since 2008, consciously engaging in ethical manufacturing practice without compromise.

The ’20s was never so loud as this romantic and [...]

The ’20s was never so loud as this romantic and luxurious version of the classic Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Robert Redford’s Jay Gatsby, who had once loved beautiful, spoiled Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), but lost to a wealthy man. But now Gatsby became mysteriously wealthy and willing to risk everything to have her back. Winner of two Academy Awards, The Great Gatsby features a fine cast in an elegant script by Francis Ford Coppola. And in the center is the evocation of a time of bustling jazz and bubbling champagne, of women as exotic and demanding, as a garden of rare flowers, and easy lives, committed for having achieved too much too soon.

THE GREAT GATSBY will open the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The long-awaited Baz Lurhmann remake will be screened in 3D on the first night of this year’s schedule, on May 15. Actress Audrey Tautou will act as host for the opening ceremony – as well as for the closing ceremony on May 26.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, the F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation was originally scheduled to open in Christmas 2012 – but was pushed back to allow Lurhmann more time to perfect the production.

“It is a great honour for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival,” said the director. “F. Scott Fitgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.”

It was previously confirmed that over 40 costumes in the film – including those worn by Mulligan – were custom-made by Miuccia Prada, using reworked pieces from the Prada and Miu Miu archives. The jewellery featured all came courtesy of Tiffany & Co, while the men’s costumes were created by American brand Brooks Brothers.

When back to back meetings happening on two different sides [...]

When back to back meetings happening on two different sides of the world is a common work scenario, private jetting serves as more than an opulent way to get around—it becomes an essential way to save precious time. Not only can these aircraft fly over the Arctic Circle, whittling a trip from NYC to Hong Kong down to a 15-hour, nonstop journey, but they allow passengers to avoid potential delays on the Tarmac, long lines at customs and the prerequisite early arrival to the airport for an international flight. Plus, the comfort private planes provide goes well beyond what you would find even in first class on a commercial flight (including a lavish standup shower), ensuring you arrive ready to tackle the task at hand. But with the average sticker price of $60M, owning your own plane isn’t a viable option for most. Enter VistaJet, a private aviation company that keeps luxury at the forefront of their approach to chartered jet service, so clients can reap the benefits of personalized travel without having to maintain a personal plane.

We recently had the chance to experience VistaJet first-hand on a flight from New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport to the Bombardier headquarters and construction facility in Montréal. It’s there that Bombardier builds out VistaJet’s 142 business jets, a fleet that includes Global 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 aircraft and allows them to touch down in almost any far-flung pocket of the world. All VistaJet needs is 24 hours’ notice and one of their planes will be at your service.

Our trip to Bombardier offered insight into how they outfit VistaJet aircraft once the main body has been built. A tour through the woodshop revealed an entirely handmade process, from carving to planing to sanding to spraying. VistaJet’s strong attention to detail is as prevalent in the quality of in-flight service as it is in the design and craftsmanship of the components of the plane.

While VistaJet founder Thomas Flohr spearheads the operations side of the business, his daughter Nina helms the creative planning. Years spent shadowing her mother, founding editor of Russian Vogue Katharina Flohr, has not only given Nina a sense of fine taste, but an immense knowledge of the fashion industry and art world. In 2011 Nina invited revered graffiti artist Retna to paint the tail of their largest private jet, the Bombardier Global Express XRS. For the Global 6000—the mid-size plane we flew in—Nina tapped English abstract painter and Turner prize nominee Ian Davenport to create an original painting of a Faberge egg on the tail in celebration of Easter and a collection of Faberge pendants selling exclusively to VistaJet clients.
